The following encapsulates nicely the pressures behind the nutraceuticals industry:
“Competition in the industry is driven by several factors such as price, safety, efficacy, packaging and brand loyalty, among others. With growing similarity among products and formulations, maintaining consumer brand loyalty is emerging as a critical yet complex issue. Global nutraceuticals market is characterized by intense competitive conditions, as a result of which consolidation activity has gathered momentum. Consequently, large pharmaceuticals companies are taking over smaller and regional players to boost their position in the intensely competitive market.”
Like many consumer markets, brand appreciation continues to drive sales. The global nutraceuticals market will exceed $187 billion sales by 2010.

SNPs or single nucleotide polymorphisms have become a powerful scientific discovery ~ leading to molecular disease identification and customized drug development.
In a nutshell, SNPs are specific variations in the DNA sequence caused by a single nucleotide; much like a published book that contains some misspelled words.
Looking at SNP variations allows us to look at our own genetic history, which is continually evolving through population growth and migration patterns. SNPs greatly contribute to genomic-based medicines that can be tailored for specific population groups.
Nutraceuticals are not immune to SNPs as different people derive different benefits from the same extracts or natural compounds. How our bodies breakdown substances depends on our unique genomic sequencing which impact how we express proteins. Everyone has some DNA anomalies predisposing us to specific allergies or reactions to certain foods. Hence functional or medical foods can elicit different degrees of benefit to patients.
An ethical and legal footnote~ SNPs can disclose our genetic liabilities outside the doctor’s office impacting our ability to secure health insurance. Confidentiality between patient and physician are now under pressures from public institutions and insurers. Hopefully, these same people along with law makers can deliver a platform for administering a fair treatment for all citizens.
Have you had any unexpected side effects with certain foods?
Are you allergic to iodine or other natural substances?

Whether they’re dietary supplements or used for treatment of condition, nutraceuticals play a vital role in our health. Large companies know this like Coca-Cola which plowed significant money into formulating new organic drinks with nutritional benefits. Diet Coke Plus is a flagship example of this. This is not a new phenomenon, Gatorade was spawned as performance drink in 1965 when the University of Florida football team consulted with the university physicians about certain treatments for heat exhaustion. In fact this would be recent history; ancient societies have study, used, and integrated nutraceuticals into their cultures.
Consider what you’re taking today. Then, Google its origin and you’ll be amazed at the rich heritage behind your supplements whether its in liquid or solid form. For example, during the 1500′s malnurished conditions, like scurvy, have exposed the need for citrus food in northern European societies. Ultimately, this lead to the vitamin C supplement. Feel free to share your findings.

Why re-create what nature already has through expensive synthetic processes. Sure, pharmaceuticals are required and have rendered real solutions to many acute and chronic conditions. …But, you can capture natural remedies that are time-tested and critically approved by many cultures; both ancient and modern.
This site will incite, delight, and offer critical dialogue on nutraceuticals, otherwise known as natural compounds having therapeutic-like effects for health-oriented conditions. This includes the affinity family of functional foods as well.
